Honda GL1000 Goldwing… 2 years ago – I would say: “I’ve never seen a nice build based on GoldWing – it cannot be done and even if… it doesn’t make any sense”. Well, when I came across Mike Audette’s ’78 GL1000 last week, I knew I’d found a kindred machine. ‘Wings may seem a strange platform for a cafe or tracker build, but they are powerful, cheap, and you can actually ride them clear across the county–hell, the country –without your hands and feet going numb from vibration. When he started work on the Honda Goldwing, touring was the last thing on his mind. His first motorcycle ride was on a GL1000 at the age of 7. So to recapture that exhilarating childhood experience he built a cafe racer that was more focused on straight line speed and aerodynamics than armchair comfort and cruising.
The Honda Goldwing isn’t the most obvious choice for a café racer custom, that said, the Goldwing cafés that I have seen built have all been very capable looking and notably handsome motorcycles.. This 1975 bike is a great example of what a typically heavy and cumbersome motorcycle can become in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing, in this case the custom work was all done.
